Some references for watershed restoration

Compiled by Lisa Therrell, Leavenworth Ranger District, Wenatchee National Forest.
Books with a "*" are those Lisa found to be most useful and would recommend to those building a restoration library.

* On-site Restoration Methods for Mountainous Areas of the West by Russell Hanbey. Intermountain Research Station, USDA Forest Service, Missoula, Montana, 1992. This is a how-to manual written with backcountry restoration in mind. If you acquire only one thing on this list, it should be this.

Restoration `89: The New Management Challenge, First Annual Meeting of the Society for Ecological Restoration. Editors H. Glenn Hughes and Thomas M. Bonnicksen. Available for purchase through Society for Ecological Restoration, The University of Wisconsin Arboretum, 1207 Seminole Highway, Madison, Wisconsin 53711. (608) 262-9547. This 593 page tome has all kinds of good stuff that I haven't read yet and should: restoration philosophy, monitoring, applications to different ecosystems, and even a paper on mycorrhizae.

* Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest by Arthur R. Kruckeberg. University of Washington Press, 1982. Since this book is written for the gardener, it is packed with info on propagation for specific native species.

* Collecting, Processing, and Germinating Seeds of Wildland Plants by James A. Young and Cheryl G. Young. Timber Press, 9999 SW Wilshire, Portland, OR 97225. Well on its way to becoming a classic, this book discusses seed collection, threshing, cleaning, storage, and germination. The second half of the book is organized by genus to discuss specific germination requirements.

Seeds of Woody Plants in the United States, U.S. Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Handbook No. 450, 1974. This is out of print, but is already in many district or S.O. libraries. (NEWS FLASH - 1992 UPDATE!! This book has been republished in a revised and enlarged form- but it costs 50 bucks! The new edition is called * Seeds of Woody Plants in North America, and was redone by James and Cheryl Young. It is also available from Timber Press.)

The Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation: From Seed to Tissue Culture, by Michael A. Dirr and Charles W. Heuser, Jr. Published by Varsity Press. I acquired my copy from Timber Press. The first part of the book covers seed propagation, cuttings, grafting and budding, and tissure culture. The heart of the book is organized by genus and species to cover many native and ornamental plants.

* Plant Propagation, by Phillip McMillan Browse. Published by Simon and Schuster. This is a wonderful how-to book that explains in layman's terms the details of plant propagation.

Seed Germination, Theory and Practice, by Norman C. Deno. Probably self published. This fascinating book describes the seed germination experiments of a retired chemist. His results lead to looking at seed germination in a whole new light. (The address inside the book is Norman C. Deno, Emeritus of Chemistry, 139 Lenor Drive, State College, PA 16801.)

Native Plant Revegetation: Proceedings of the Symposium, November 15, 1984. Edited by John P. Rieger and Bobbie A. Steele. Obtain by writing California Native Plant Society, c/o San Diego Natural History Museum, P.O. Box 1390, San Diego, CA 92112. This proceedings is quite specific to the California environs.

Another wonderful old book back in print!! The Range Plant Handbook, United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, 1937. Discusses many species found throughout the western United States, and has many beautiful line drawings.

Proceedings: High Altitude Revegetation Workshops, Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO. This is a series of proceedings from a number of workshops, with an emphasis towards mining reclamation. Each proceedings is a different price. For more information write Bulletin Room, Aylesworth Hall, CSU, Fort Collins, CO 80523.

Ingwersen's Manual of Alpine Plants by Will Ingwersen VHM. Collingridge Books, 1986. Available from Timber Press. This book describes alpine plants from around the globe, and makes a few remarks on plants difficult to grow.

Challenge of Producing Native Plants for the Intermountain Area. Proceedings Intermountain Nurseryman's Association 1983 Conference, August 8-11, 1983, Los Vegas, NV. US Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, Ogden, UT. This is no longer in print and is now available through National Technical Information Service, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Springfield, VA 22161. $13.

Environmental Restoration: Science and Strategies for Restoring the Earth. Edited by John H. Berger, Island Press. This is another book I haven't read yet, but it is a compilation of papers on restoration in many different environments and varying degrees of disturbance.
