Forest Service and School District Cooperate for Environmental Education

Mary Kay Buck

The USFS, Hoopa High and Elementary Schools and the Hoopa Valley Tribe have entered into a formal cooperative CRMP (Coordinated Resource Management Plan - a tool to structure agreements) to establish programs to educate high school and elementary school students about the importance of natural resource protection. We also hope to interest students in natural resource careers. The objectives as outlined in the CRMP are:

Several activities have been planned for the school year. An "Environmental Trail" will be established on Hospital Creek. Students will work on the trail from start to finish with the guidance of USFS and Tribal employees and teachers.

The CRMP Group will set up an Environmental Education Week at the Hoopa Elementary School where USFS and Tribal professionals will guide children through nature investigations. USFS and Tribal professionals will give presentations to Hoopa High school science classes about their resource field and elaborate on career possibilities. Field excursions will be organized for students who show a strong interest in a particular resource area.

All parties in the CRMP believe it is of utmost importance to instill interest in natural resource protection at the lower grade levels and feed this interest through high school. In this way, there is a higher probability of students choosing natural resource careers. We believe this CRMP will accomplish these important goals and have a lasting effect on the students future careers.
