Summer 1999

WMC Board Meetings, January 22 and March 26

By Jim Bergman

The January and March board meetings centered around the 1999 and 2000 budgets, the 1999 biannual field tour, status of the October, 1998 Biannual Conference (Managing Western Watersheds: Science and StrategiesBoise, Idaho) and cosponsorships.

The 1999 budget is in place and the WMC is solvent and operational. The WMC began the year with about $20,000. This should be enough to cover operations, planning, cosponsorships, the field tour and educational endeavors. This is not a conference year, so we will be running on fumes by the end of the year. The year 2000 budget is being developed and will be presented at our next board meeting in July.

This is the year of the field tour. It will be held October 7 and 8, 1999 and will tour the Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake areas, addressing local water and management issues. Various local representatives will accompany the tour group, explaining local issues and management direction. This is a beautiful area with stimulating diversity. Attendance is limited so don't wait to sign up.

The 1998 Boise Conference was a great success and the proceedings will be in print by the time this newsletter is distributed. Planning has begun for the Millenium 2000 Conference.

Co-sponsorships include the International Conference of the Society for Ecological Restoration to be held at the Presidio in San Francisco, September 23-25, 1999, where the WMC has organized a session; a 2 day summer session with the Feather River CRMP; and the Watershed Management symposium of the American Society of Civil Engineers to be held at Fort Collins, Colorado, June 21-24, 2000, where the WMC is organizing a technical session and a field trip.
