"A young girl walking alone on the seashore met an old man holding
an antique jug. "Good evening, Old Father!" greeted the girl,
"Do you have a genie in the bottle?"
"Do not scoff, Young Daughter," his dry voice commanded. "In
this flask I hold the Genius of the Universe, the Spirit of the Living Earth.
It contains the power to flatten mountains, the artistry to paint the skies,
and the strength to transport whales. In this bottle is a Maker of Miracles-the
Giver and the Gift of Life."
"I will show you, Daughter, only if you pledge to celebrate this marvel
and to praise Nature for its vital gift." "How could I not,"
she promised, "if such a genie has the powers you describe."
The old man withdrew the stopper. "Put forth you hands and feel the
magic released from its containment." Clear fluid splashed over the
young girl's fingers.
"But Old Father!" she scolded, "There's nothing in your bottle
but plain water!"
He pressed the flask to his weathered lips and moistened his mouth before
he replied, "Precisely as I said."
